The Outer Worlds Review. The role-playing genre, which has always been a buyer in the video game world, has given very good fruits in the console generation we are in. Games such as Persona 5, Fallout 4 and Divinity: Original Sin series that appeal to hardcore gamers in general and that do not stand out with their action, locked those who played for hours on the screen.
The Obsidian team, which made their mark on similar role-playing games, proved itself once again with South Park: The Stick of Truth and Pillars of Eternity series in this generation . Before Fallout New VegasThe company, which won the hearts of the players, announced at the last E3 fair that it started a new project by taking a risk. Obsidian , who is preparing to bid farewell to this generation with the name of The Outer Worlds , let’s see if they give what is expected of them again. Let’s take a closer look together.
The Outer Worlds Review
Preferring an alternative universe in terms of story, the Obsidian team started the script in 1901 when former American President Willian McKinley was not assassinated. The US government, which cannot rule the market for its own purposes because it takes place in an alternative universe, gradually leaves the management to big companies.
In the continuation of the story in which the capitalist order works in a brutal way, colonies begin to be established in space. When you slowly begin to enter the world of The Outer Worlds , which took place in 2355 , you can see how much money, authority and rank people are willing to appreciate and their merit is at a low level. Of course, let’s point out that this story takes place in the background of the game.
When you start the game, you learn that you are a passenger on a spaceship named Hope . Our ten-year journey stretches up to sixty years, due to a ship failure during the voyage. Then our main character, who sleeps in ice , wakes up, similar to the movie Passengers , and we have to travel to another orbit using hyper space. The scientist Phineas Vernon Welles , who also appears in the trailers, is forcibly landing us on the nearest planet Terra 2 in order to save the Halycon colony to which we belong . Finally, our adventure begins on a planet we have never known, in the role of an alien who has lost ties from our colony and must return.
I should mention that the beginning of this story, which we can see as a cliché from time to time, but which has a huge veil of secret behind it, is interesting. Similar to Fallout games in storytelling , The Outer Worlds does not neglect to remind you of the importance of the main story during the game. So even when you dive into the side missions, you feel obliged to return to the main story as soon as possible thanks to the sub-texts or environmental factors offered by the game.
While the capsule we landed on Terra 2 is fully launched, the character creation screen is presented to our control. While we can create the facial contours in a very detailed way, we cannot touch the physical features of our body. In addition to the appearance on the character creation screen, the abilities of our character are also determined in detail. You should bring together the three basic elements that make up our character that is separated as Body, Mind and Personality in a balanced way. Because here you lay the foundation of the decisions you will make and the actions you will take at the beginning of the game.
The Outer Worlds Review: Character
In the talent part, we create the detail features of our character. On this screen, you will decide what most features will look like, such as being persuasive in dialogues, our weapon prowess, our engineering or medical skills. If you are familiar with FRP games, this screen will be no stranger to you. In addition to the skill creation part of the game, there is also another skill selection part that changes the interaction with more NPCs. Aptidude We choose what kind of role we are on Earth before starting the story.
On this screen, we can determine that we are prone to professions such as farmer, cleaner, bureaucrat or factory worker. If you want, you can also set your character as an unqualified element in this section. However, you should remember that this option will not be very beneficial.
The gameplay mechanics of the game are deeper than I expected. We have a mysterious and intriguing story, but I must point out that the mechanical details of the game are the main interesting part. But at the same time, the fact that the most striking problems of the game are in these mechanics will upset those who play. First of all, the Obsidian team wanted to prioritize the relationships between our character and NPCs.
This part was already overlooked in the promotions of the game. You only have communication with NPCs in the context of the current situation. In addition, we cannot sit and chat with every character we see for minutes. The Outer Worlds, which brings the faces of the characters we interact with to the main screen as in Fallout games, in this part made me quite entertained. In the game where we can shape the story according to our mind, NPCs are not included in the story depending on you. So while playing the game, you don’t feel like the center of the world.
When talking to the characters, it is entirely up to us to lie, deceive, gasify or intimidate. However, there is a small detail to be aware of in this part. You get the same reaction as you treat the characters. On the other hand, NPCs also have the possibility to lie to you. You can even solve this situation with NPC’s gestures if you are a careful player. In general, I can easily say that The Outer Worlds attaches great importance to our connection with NPCs and our conversations. If you are looking for role-playing games in interaction with NPCs, The Outer Worlds will satisfy you. You can even kill all NPCs that exist in the game’s world if you wish.
In addition to all these, it is necessary to underline that not all mechanics of the game work in the same quality. In particular, the lack of open world of the game was one of the first factors that killed my game taste. The shallow routine animations of the NPCs in the open world are the main reason for this situation. The Outer Worlds , which I guessed does not have a large budget , unfortunately did not get a passing grade from us in terms of open world. In addition, the details I encountered in the open world are also the details of Fallout New Vegas , another Obsidian game released years ago.
Being lower than ‘made my expectations a little disappointed. The planet we started the game with in the production, which includes two separate main planets, offers a more friendly environment, while the other contains a more dangerous environment.
The biggest issue that affected the wars in gameplay mechanics was the feature called Tactical Time Dilation . The same bullet time as we decide when more comfortable in battle and thanks to this feature that slows down our character. At the same time, we have the opportunity to aim at the vital parts of our enemies by using the TTD feature. If we want, we can strengthen this bar, which decreases as we use it, but is automatically filled after wars, thanks to perks.
This mechanic, which is very similar to Fallout’s VATS feature, has been added to the game in order to relieve the players. Because let’s point out that the battles of the game are really challenging sometimes. Speaking of the game’s battles, it would be nice not to mention the feeling of hitting. The Outer WorldsAlthough the variety of weapons is not as wide as the Borderlands 3 released recently , we can encounter interesting weapons in the game.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find enough of the game’s weapon usage. While some of the weapons that can be developed with additional apparatus cause heavy damage to the enemies, the unnecessaryness of some weapons can make the battles of the game monotonous.
The perk part of the game was the most important element in the development of the character. The three-level perk system is generally compared to the perk systems we encounter in other games. Damage, life, etc. The more we get perks that increase similar values, the stronger our character can be. Likewise, our followers on duty with us also have special perks.
In addition to the role-playing mechanics of The Outer Worlds , our followers that we collected from the missions in the game were also some of the most colorful parts of the game. In time, we can direct these followers, of whom we are friends, in wars as we wish. This system, similar to Mass Effect , added a different dimension to wars. If you encounter a large group of enemies, you can defeat the enemy groups by planning, thanks to your followers.
You can choose the fighting style your followers will use or how they will fight. But let’s point out that your followers do not die in wars in the game where everyone can die. If a follower is lost in battle, it will appear directly next to you at the end of the mission. This, too, can kill the game’s sense of realism.
The graphics of the game were far from realism as of the generation we are in. The Outer Worlds , which has a unique graphic style , especially used the color palette very well. The color harmony that I personally liken to No Man’s Sky is evident in the artistic designs of the game. However, it should be noted that the animation part of the game is unfortunately bad. In particular, the scarcity of NPCs in terms of animation has been one of the situations that undermines the game pleasure. Obsidian , who made good choices in the music section , has done a successful job in ambient sounds.
When we come to the end, The Outer Worlds review has been a fun game with dozens of details in terms of story, successful in role-playing, and chronic errors in some places. The production, which is made by the talented developer of the game world, Obsidian, will easily mark the last period.
